The Transit Windsor Board of Directors approved changing the definition of ‘STUDENTS’, for the purpose of fare media products to include elementary, secondary and post-secondary, effective September 1, 2009, on a permanent basis.
This translates into a substantial savings for post-secondary students. For example, a monthly student pass is $55 rather than the adult pass at $79.
The student fare was available to post-secondary students as part of a pilot project, on a trial basis. Due to the success of this program, the Board supported the permanent change. Prior to the pilot project, post-secondary students paid the full adult fare.
“Providing this reduced rate for post-secondary students has been a great benefit to our community”, said Councillor Caroline Postma, Chair of the Transit Windsor Board of Directors. Postma continued, “Our student ridership has increased, allowing more students to rely on public transit and in turn reducing their transportation costs. As any student or parent can tell you, with tuition constantly increasing, savings in other areas are most welcomed.”
Student fare media products terms and conditions:
• Must be attending an accredited school on a full-time basis.
• When paying by ticket or cash, a valid student card must be presented to the driver. Failure to do so will result in the passenger paying the full adult fare.
• All students are required to update their photo identification with a sticker on an annual basis while attending school.
• There is no fee for the sticker and a valid student card is required in order to receive. Stickers are available at the Windsor International Transit Terminal.
