Student Ambassadors host concert in aid of Special Olympics - March 9, 2009 - Written By: Denny Timm
Co-Chair of the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee (MYAC) and the Transit Windsor Student Ambassador Program (SAP), Denny Timm, today announced details of a Youth Concert to be held at the Boom Boom Room on Wednesday, March 18. Featuring the revolutionary band One Man’s Opinion, the power-popping trio of Inoke Errati (pronounced “I Know Karate”), plus the youthful sounds of The Afterparty. The Concert is open to youth aged 14 to 26 and is an explosive live show benefiting the Windsor Special Olympic Summer Games.

Tickets to the Concert are $10 for general admission or $20 for the VIP Media Fan Zone, and can be purchased at the Windsor International Transit Terminal (WITT) located at 300 Chatham Street West or at the Guest Services Desk at Devonshire Mall on presentation of valid student ID. Students/parents are advised that ID will be checked at the door on the night of the concert. The concert is limited to 100 VIP Media Fan Zone tickets and 400 general admission tickets. The alcohol-free event is geared towards secondary and post-secondary students. Doors open at 7:30 pm for VIP Ticket Holders, and at 8:00 pm for general admission. Supported by and in partnership with Windsor Police Services, the lead organizers of the 2009 Windsor Special Olympics Summer Games, the concert is sponsored by 89X, The Boom Boom Room and The Windsor Star. “This is an exciting initiative,” said Denny Timm. “Engaging our youth, the wild vocals, original lyrics and spectacular performances offer unadulterated pleasure and benefit a remarkable and very special cause.”

Students are encouraged to take advantage of an added incentive and “price break” offered by Transit Windsor. Reducing their student fare from $1.70 each way to just a buck during March Break, Transit Windsor is hoping to increase the number of student riders during March 15 - 21, 2009 and promote the benefits of using public transit. The ridership will be tracked through electronic fareboxes and compared to previous March break week statistics to determine the variances.

Background

The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee (MYAC) is comprised of student volunteers from various secondary schools and community groups within the City of Windsor. The MYAC identifies and reports to the Mayor and Council issues that effect youth in the City of Windsor. In May of 2007, the Board appointed a member of MYAC to sit on the Transit Windsor Board as a non-voting member.

The Student Ambassador Program (SAP) is a group of volunteers from each secondary school within the City of Windsor. The SAP was established as a subcommittee of MYAC to promote public transit at the secondary level and assist in improving communications, increasing ridership and the environmental benefits of sustainable transportation.
