Local Youth Learn About Anti-Racism - Sunday, October 28th, 2007 - Written By: Race and Ethnocultural Relations
Local organizations, musicians, artists and young people will gather at the CAW Local 444 Hall, 1855 Turner Road on Sunday, Oct. 28 from 1 – 4 pm to take a stand against Racism and Discrimination and celebrate diversity.
The event is free and open to the public.
Raising awareness about the Canadian Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism, the City of Windsor Race and Ethnocultural Relations Committee and the UNESCO Working Group invite youth and families to spend an afternoon learning about ways to combat racism and discrimination in our community.
Participants will be asked to get their passports stamped as they learn more about Windsor’s commitment to a strong, healthy, diverse community. The completed passports will enter into a draw for prizes presented during the event.
Seventeen groups will be providing information/activity booths including: The City of Windsor, Race and Ethnocultural Committee, Women’s Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor, Windsor Public Library, the Multicultural Council of Windsor and Essex County, Windsor Police Services, Windsor Women Working with Immigrant Women, University of Windsor, Conseil Scolaire de District des Écoles Catholiques du Sud-ouest and Windsor Fire and Rescue.
We are also excited about our special guest the Ontario Human Rights Commission.

Interactive information booths will emphasize how community groups and the municipality honour the Ten Common Commitments of the UNESCO Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism. The Commitments focus on support, respect and accountability within a community so that it protects against systemic and individual racism and discrimination. A few of the displays are listed below:
- University of Windsor Faculty of Education will focus on information on bullying.

- The Ontario Human Rights Commission will explain their mandate and snap photos of participants while asking for comments on what individuals can do for human rights.

- Windsor’s Community Museum will display its exhibit Rising Dragon: Chinese-Canadians in Windsor and explain how the exhibit will be available on the web.

- Parks and Recreation has information on city parks and programs plus craft activities.
