Transit Windsor and the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee are launching the first ever Transit Windsor Student Ambassador Program. The program is an initiative created out of a desire from Windsor’s youth to have a direct link with Transit Windsor to build a relationship that focuses on the needs of this passenger demographic. The Student Ambassador Program will be launched at all Windsor area high schools this fall. The University of Windsor and St. Clair College will also be participating.
Students may apply to become an Ambassador. Participation in the program will allow students the opportunity to earn volunteer hours and receive a free monthly bus pass for the school year. Student Ambassadors will act as drivers of the information highway between Transit Windsor and the schools. Ambassadors will ensure each school has current information regarding Transit Windsor’s services, fares, schedules and rider guidelines. The aim of the program is to create a link between each party to allow for open two-way dialogue to enhance the delivery of services and information. Duties of the position include setting up a bulletin board in the school, to provide students with up-to-date transit information, and volunteering time to represent Transit Windsor at community events. Deadline to enter is Friday, September 28, 2007.
The issue of Transit Windsor first came up at the Youth Town Hall held at Devonshire Mall on August 24, 2006. Suggestions youth made at this forum included having a Transit Windsor trip planner online and subsidized yearly costs for high school and university students. The suggestion to have a youth representative position on the Transit Windsor Board was approved in April 2007 with the appointment of a non-voting member.
After holding a subsequent open forum at City Hall on September 28, 2006 to specifically target this topic, the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee created a sub-committee to deal with students’ transit needs. The sub-committee met throughout this summer and the result of these meetings was the creation of the Student Ambassador Program.
