Youth are about to take over the Artspeak Gallery for a weeklong celebration of youth arts and youth artists. From September 4th through September 7th, the Artspeak Gallery will be hosting work by youth artists from the region. Some of these works which will include photography, painting and more will also be for sale. The Youth Arts Council (YAC) will host a reception on Tuesday, September 4th from 6pm to 8pm where all the featured artists will be present, to officially open the exhibit. On Friday, September 7th, YAC will be hosting a free open-mic night at the gallery, from 6pm to 8pm, for youth to come out and share their talents, which can include music, poetry, comedy, and more, amongst their peers. The Artspeak Gallery is located at 1942 Wyandotte St. E., Windsor.
The Youth Arts Council [has] heard the opinions and suggestions from young people within the
community, says Neil Katzman, a member. Showcasing youth talent more often was one of these suggestions. The Artspeak Gallery also gives these youth a venue to host the open-mic night, a way for young people to both display their talent and have fun.
On March 1, 2007, the Youth Arts Council was established as a committee of the Arts Council - Windsor & Region (ACWR). The Youth Arts Council consists of youth, aged 12 to 24, who want to make an impact on the community using their talent. For more information, please contact Prerna Chandak, chair of the Youth Arts Council, at pchandak@windsoryouth.com. ACWR was founded in 1979 and is a non-profit organization that enriches the quality of life for all by strengthening the arts and the community through leadership, education and promotion.
